From Adweek comes this article about beach trash cans with QR codes.

Once you snap the QR code “you’ll find a mobile website with the latest weather, water quality, community Twitter updates and other pertinent sun-and-fun tidbits.” The latest weather? As in, that stuff that surrounds you at the moment you engage the QR code? How helpful.

So here you are on the beach. There’s lots to take in: there is beautiful weather, (which you know because you have sensory system, not because a QR code told you so) and there is beautiful people. And then there is an idiot staring his phone while trying to take a picture of a tiny code on a trash can.

This is why I don’t understand the popularity of QR codes. More often than not, they require more effort with less return than simply a URL or similar call to action. I have to open the QR app, try to focus the code (which isn’t easy), then wait for something to load, most often my browser that takes me a URL. Just post the bit.ly, it takes less time to type that in.

Although, given Charlie Davies incredible comeback culminating with him scoring two goals in the DC United opener, this sure seems appropriate:

“[Agencies] are hiring people with web skills, which are way different from traditional advertising skills.” – TAC

I see lots of this. Plenty of companies looking for someone who knows Google Analytics, is familiar with social media, can edit in Dreamweaver, who is proficient in Adobe Creative Suite and, usually last on the list, is a good writer and creative. Those first few job requirements? Those are skills. Skills that can be taught to any competent applicant for your job.

Those last two? You can’t teach those. At least not as quickly or easily as you can the others. It’s a bit of talent and lots of hard work. It’s knowing what is and isn’t good. Any schmuck can use Google Analytics to tell you which pages attract more traffic and from what sources. Only a few can concept the ideas and execute the content that brings the people there in the first place.

We’re placing too much emphasis on the medium and not enough on the quality of message.
