I woke up at 4:30am feeling guilty that I haven’t written anything creative in too long of a time. I’m considering adding a page to this blog of my creative works, but until that decision is made, I feel an odd sense of obligation to provide readers with some great writing. It’s Wednesday, we’re all looking for inspiration (more on this later in the week).
If the title of this post doesn’t ring a bell to you, I’d like to introduce you to one of the 20th century’s best pieces of writing. You can read more about Gay Talese’s Frank Sinatra Has a Cold over at Esquire, who originally published the work and has it on their site. To read the piece online, I recommend Talese’s site. Or you can download the .pdf, print it out and read it on the bus or train.
I remember sitting in a creative nonfiction class with Lee Gutkind, who was dramatically setting the stage for this piece before our class read it. So often when a teacher or professor boasts of a reading assignment, we’re let down as students. Not this time.
So take 10-15 minutes, escape the work week and treat yourself to the emotions unique to reading a great piece of writing. I don’t do this often enough, but each time I do, I’m reminded of so much.
