So the economy sucks, the world is melting and there are no good holidays left until July 4th. If you’re me, you’re depressed that you’re powerless. If you a politician however, you realize that you have the opportunity to make people’s lives a little bit better.
Meet Californian state representative, Anna G. Eshoo. Thirty minutes ago, I had never heard of Rep. Eshoo, but now, I’m her biggest fan. Eshoo has introduced a bill named the “Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act.”
Say you’re sitting on the couch, maybe you just got done with dinner, maybe you just want to relax or have some background noise to fall asleep to. Just after Dirty Jobs finishes up with a few Mike Rowe bloopers, you’re suddenly jolted upright by a commercial screaming at twice the volume of the program you were quietly enjoying.
This is one of the single most annoying ‘small things’ in life and Eshoo is trying to change that. So I applaud Rep. Eshoo and her efforts. I’m sure her opponents will call the bill a waste of time and say there are larger issues at hand. Of course there are, but sometimes, it’s the little things that can have an impact.
I can’t change the economy or global warming, and Eshoo can’t either by herself. But if she can improve the few hours a week in front of the TV where I go to forget about these things, then she’s made my life better.
Kudos.

Hi Mark,
Nice post. Honestly I had no idea that this even was an option for advertisers when using TV! I agree very annoying, and this is something that happens ALL THE TIME, especially with those cheesy infomecials. They are the worst.
